How do you calculate the load capacity of a cantilever rack?

Calculating the load capacity of a cantilever rack involves several steps and considerations to ensure safety and efficiency.

Calculation Steps

Determine Total Load Weight: Establish the total weight of the items you plan to store on the rack.

Calculate Load Per Arm: Divide the total load weight by the number of arms that will support the load. 

Required Arm Capacity=Total Load Weight/ Number of Arms

Check Arm Capacity: Ensure that the calculated load per arm does not exceed the arm's capacity. If using 48"x4" arms rated at 2,000 pounds, this configuration would be acceptable.

Calculate Upright Capacity: Multiply the load per arm by the number of arms to determine the total capacity required for the uprights:

Total Upright Capacity=Load per arm×Number of Arms

Verify Column Capacity: Ensure that the calculated total upright capacity does not exceed the maximum capacity of the columns. For instance, if three arms are used, and each arm supports 2,000 pounds, the total upright capacity would be 6,000 pounds, which must be within the limits of the columns.

Consider Other Factors: Take into account any additional loads on the base and ensure that all components are properly anchored to maintain stability.
