Drive-in racking is a high-density storage solution that allows forklifts to access multiple racks through a series of lanes for the purpose of depositing or retrieving pallets. This system features floor-to-ceiling steel racking structures, which include steel racks and rails capable of accommodating over ten pallets in depth. Drive-in racking is particularly effective for storing pallet loads with the same or a limited variety of SKUs.

How Drive-In Racking Works
Drive-in racking operates by utilizing rails that feature a ledge-like design, providing a stable support system for pallets on both sides. To load a pallet, an operator maneuvers a forklift into the designated lane and places the pallet onto these rails. The pallets are organized in a stacking format, progressing from the back of the lane to the front and from the bottom to the top.
Typically, this racking system functions on a first-in, last-out (FILO) basis, meaning that the most recently stored pallets are the first to be retrieved. However, it can also accommodate a first-in, first-out (FIFO) approach by incorporating an access aisle on the opposite side of the storage lane. This parallel aisle configuration allows one side to be used for loading pallets while the other side is designated for retrieval. Although adding this additional aisle may slightly reduce overall storage capacity, it still provides high-density storage while enhancing stock rotation. This makes drive-through racking particularly advantageous for managing perishable goods effectively.

FAQ
What are the main advantages of drive-in racking?
The key advantages include maximum utilization of available space, simple and economical design, configurable depth and height, and energy savings from reduced aisle space.
When should drive-in racking be used?
Drive-in racking is ideal for warehouses with homogeneous goods and a large number of pallets per SKU, as well as for cold storage applications.
What are the two main types of drive-in racking?
Single entry drive-in racks allow forklift access from one side only, while double entry racks permit access from both sides of the racking structure.
How does the loading and unloading process work?
With drive-in racking, the forklift enters the storage lane with the pallet raised above the level it will be placed on. The pallet is then deposited in the deepest free location, starting from floor level and moving upwards.
What are the key components of a drive-in racking system?
Essential components include uprights, frames, rails, horizontal beams, arms, row spacers, upper longitudinal beams, horizontal braces, and forklift guide rails.
What inventory management system does drive-in racking use?
Drive-in racking typically follows a last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory management system, where the most recently stored items are the first to be retrieved.
What are the limitations of drive-in racking?
Potential drawbacks include the LIFO system leading to older products being stored longer, more potential for misuse, and the need for good quality pallets to support the load.
What types of forklifts are used with drive-in racking?
Counterbalanced forklifts and reach trucks are commonly used, with counterbalanced forklifts typically limited to 7.5 m in height and reach trucks able to exceed 11 m.
Can drive-in racking be converted to drive-through?
Yes, in some cases drive-in racking can be modified to a drive-through configuration by removing the backstop and creating an opening on the opposite side of the storage bay
